New York: "Mecca of Basketball"?

Please stop calling New York the "Mecca of Basketball". The last time the Knickerbockers won a title (way back in 1973...ask your grandfather about it), Knickerbocker was still a local brand of beer and the Knicks sixth man was a gangly sort named Phil Jackson. The best way to shut up a loudmouth New York sports fan is to bring up the lowly Knicks. And can we count the Nets as being part of Mecca too, since they will soon be moving to the Mecca of Urine-Soaked Subways, Brooklyn? Hello New York...from the home of the NBA Finals, Los Angeles.

Mecca of basketball ignorance -- Tom Leykis

The mecca of basketball title is bestowed on NYC not just because of what's happened in Madison Square Garden (and the admittedly Train Wreck Knicks of this era did get to the finals once in the 90s), but also what happens in the famous playgrounds there, in the West Village and Coney Island, at the Rucker tournament in Harlem and elsewhere around the city. Did you see "He Got Game"? "course, the Lakers got swept by a big ol' German fellow playing for a team from Dallas. Sorry, Tom, but the Lakers are about to implode.
