"They Would Like to Book You!" - The Inside Story of How PR Sausage Is Made
This blog will mostly be interesting to people who are in the entertainment industry or who follow that industry as fans. If the subject matter isn’t interesting to you or doesn’t apply to you, my apologies, but I have something to say that demands to be heard.
The following commentary consists solely of my constitutionally-protected opinion and the actual redacted emails of my now-former publicist, one Tom Estey. It is my opinion that he doesn’t want you to see what is below, and I have been made aware that he has apparently been calling threatening lawsuits.
A lawsuit would mean that Mr. Estey would have to go to court and prove that what I am saying is demonstrably not true and that I harbor malice towards him, which I do not. In addition, Mr. Estey should understand that, should he decide to sue for “libel,” I would countersue him and ask him to demonstrate that he adequately performed the services that I paid him to perform. I don’t think he’d want that.
It may surprise you to know that most everyone in the media or entertainment industries employs a publicist. And I am no exception. I have had three different publicists over the last thirteen years.
It is my belief that, when you pay someone multiple thousands of dollars per month to get you media placement, it is their job to either get the desired placement on TV shows, in magazines or in newspapers, or, if that is impossible, to honestly say to the client “Sorry…for whatever reason, I can’t get you the coverage you want. Let’s say we call it a day?” But, in my experience, publicists generally never seem to say that.
Each time I have hired a publicist, I have gotten plenty of action in the beginning, with high-profile interview after high-profile interview, followed by a dropoff as the publicist signs newer, more demanding clients who tend to take more of his time. One thing publicists never seem to do, however, is to step forward and concede that they actually can’t (or won’t) get the job done, for whatever reason. They simply continue invoicing you every month, taking your money and producing less and less until the inevitable “come to Jesus” meeting in which things get ugly.
Some people apparently think I’m just stupid or reckless. I am not. This blog contains absolutely no libel. Just the actual emails of Tom Estey, with my personal recollections of the results of alleged interviews he had supposedly arranged in his job of keeping my name in the news. Many of you have been asking why my TV appearances recently have sunk to appearing on Fox & Friends in the oh-so-desirable 3:30 AM Pacific timeslot. Good question. I’d like to know the answer to that too!
This is not to say that Mr. Estey never got me any placement at all. I have appeared three times on HLN’s Prime News (which, despite its name, does not appear in prime time!). And I even appeared once on Fox & Friends after the sun came up when I was in New York on a morning in December 2010. But LA daily papers? Forget it. LA Times? Nope. OC Register? Only when I called the columnist, a friend named Gary Lycan. LA Weekly? Uh-uh.
To be fair, until our split, Mr. Estey had a lovely personality and was relatively easy to get along with. Then, when I expressed concern about the number of promised interviews and the total lack of apparent actual follow-through, his demeanor changed dramatically and he wrote the following email (in its entirety):
“Just left you a voicemail. This is bullshit -- simply put.”
So eloquent coming from a man whose continual tweets of Deepak Chopra and cheery inspirational quotes wouldn’t suggest such a mastery of vulgarity.
Take a look at the following actual redacted emails from Mr. Estey, each one followed by my recounting of each outcome. I AM ISSUING THE FOLLOWING CHALLENGE: If any of the purported interviews outlined below ever actually took place and I am wrong, I will pay Mr. Estey $100,000 cash. You tell ME if this is “bullshit.”

The show debuts on October 11th in 100 percent of the country hosted by Sharon Osborne, Holly Robinson Peete, Julie Cheng and Leah Remini. This would be a sitdown interview only with a focus on The Tenets of Leykis (they will promote New Normal, etc. as well).

I could go on and on about this, but I would rather know your opinion about this subject and the apparent performance of Mr. Estey. I would be more than happy to publish his side of the story. All he has to do is to ask. Should I have cut him loose long ago? Maybe. But should he have told me if getting me media placement was difficult or impossible? I think so.

For fear of any retaliation coming back on me, I won't give my name but I too was F.CKED by Tom Estey...SAME EXACT STORY---They would like to book you---and EVERY TIME, excuse after excuse after excuse. I will NEVER EVER in a million years use him again. My wife tried to warn me but I was too dumb to see it because some "things" did happen...just not what was apparently supposed to happen after getting "confirmation" in his emails...It's ridiculous and this guy needs to be stopped. This does not go hand in hand with admitting failure.
If he can not produce proof of the actual contacts he emailed about,
then his emails were pure fabrication and depending on the contract you signed he may be liable to paying back his fee. I would have one of your many attorneys check the written word and see if it is a case or not. In fact, you should be able to read the employment agreement and get an idea if there is a hope or not before spending even more money on the subject needlessly.
You are not to blame, but are a man of habit, doing the same thing, over and over does not produce a different result. Look for a new way to get promoted. After all YOU are a promotion genius!
Your actions give away that you are either, a patient and understanding man, or too busy to over see day to day, and need a personal assistant, who you can dictate all the things you think about doing, but just do not get to, because life gets in the way. A few manpower dollars spent can save millions and your lowered stress level will make you face the sunrise saying, “god I love spending money on this personal assistant, really worth every penny.” Hire a detailed oriented person who actually follows directions and has the brain to work without permission to fart.

Tom, I cannot believe I found your blog, but I paid Tom Estey for a year and a half and the SAME THING happened to me. He nearly ruined my business. He told me that he got me booked as a paid regular on Better TV . He kept saying for 7 months the contract was coming - he even told me how much they were going to pay. He told me the person he was dealing with at Better Tv. I called her and she said she had no idea what I was talking about and that they don't even hire freelance reporters. In the meantime, I turned down a great deal with another media company. He told me I had a concise profile feature in a few different magazines, including Complete Woman Magazine. I called the magazine and found out I never had a profile. Tom told me it actually came out in November and he was waiting for a copy.... Boy that is pretty nervey to out and out just lie like that. So unethical. At the time I was not making much money with my new company and basically threw that monthly retainer fee in the trash - just thinking he was working to help spread the work about my business. I then started calling all my contacts to find out EVERYTHING he told me was a lie. I was devastated that someone could do this to me. He is obviously doing this to a lot of his clients. How long will it take them to find out? He even toldl me that a huge literary agent was interested in my writing for children. So I hustled to finish my children's book only to find out they don't even market children's books. Unbelievable..... Im sorry to hear this happened to you as well.

I would say to Estey the following- Look Estey nothing you have arranged has happened. From today on, you will supply my new assistant with the same information you have forwarded to me. She/He will verify it. If its bogus, the cost for the assistant's time is deducted from your bill. If the arrangement for the appearance,
show or whatever materializes there is no cost deducted fron your bill.
If Estey agrees, look for an intern as the assistant, anyone would jump high for that opportunity.
Lastly, when dealing with anyone who you pay, remember Don't expect what you don't inspect.

When I pay a retainer for this kind of service, I make sure to keep them under pressure all the time. If I don't see some action at least once a week, I let them know I'm not happy. If I don't receive follow up on a pitch I received, I ask about it. In a perfect world, these things shouldn't be your concern. But when he's slipping up multiple times? What happened to your "3 Strikes" rule?

Your PR person needs to be honest with you. If they can't get placements either because of problems with you or problems with their connections to producers, bookers, talent buyers or whoever, that is something you need to know up front. For, as you said, thousands of dollars a month, they should either do the job or refuse to accept the money because they feel the job is impossible to do.
Sadly, very few people seem to do this. They take the money and do the work and if it works out, or not, well, what can you do?
My story? I hired a PR firm (CyberPR ran by Ariel Hyatt) and promised to land me radio interviews and airplay for my songs. I did get some interviews, but they were mainly with bloggers in their bedrooms in their PJs with BlogTalkRadio.com accounts who were litterally phoning in their shows. They sounded like crap and nobody listened so needless to say, I moved zero copies of my product. Same deal with the "airplay." This was mostly in the form of being included on podcasts that nobody listens to. Did I get on Actual radio stations? No. I was told they Called at least 15 of the stations my press kit had been submitted to but I sincerely doubt they got the kind of follow-up necessary to enter into actual rotation.
At first I just chalked it up to the fact that I'm a brand new recording artist that is virtually unknown but if TOM FREAKIN' LEYKIS can't land a booking, this has got to suggest that maybe, just maybe, many people in PR are Full Of Shit. At this point, I'm leaning heavily toward the latter.
